Buyer's Guide

How to Choose the Right Pallet

Selecting the correct pallet involves more than just picking a size. Load weight, product type, handling equipment, storage environment, and shipping destination all play a role. Use this guide to narrow down your options before requesting a quote.

Step 1: Define Your Load

Start with the basics. What is the total weight of the product that will sit on each pallet? Will the weight be distributed evenly, or is it concentrated in certain areas? Heavy, concentrated loads (like engine blocks or steel coils) require thicker stringers and closer deck board spacing than evenly distributed loads (like cases of bottled water).

Also consider the product footprint. Ideally, the product should sit within the pallet edges without overhanging. Overhang causes forklift interference, racking instability, and product damage. If your product dimensions do not match any standard pallet size, a custom pallet may be the best investment.

Step 2: Consider Your Environment

Where will the pallet spend most of its life? Indoor, climate-controlled warehouses are forgiving environments where standard wood pallets perform well. But cold storage, outdoor yards, wet processing areas, and cleanrooms each impose demands that favor different pallet materials.

Cold storage environments cause wood to absorb moisture and swell, leading to dimensional changes and mold growth. Plastic pallets resist moisture completely and are the standard choice for freezer and refrigerated warehouse applications. Outdoor storage exposes pallets to rain, UV, and temperature cycling that accelerates wood degradation but barely affects plastic.

Step 3: Evaluate Handling Equipment

The type of material handling equipment in your facility determines whether you need two-way or four-way entry pallets. Standard forklifts can enter stringer pallets from two sides (or four sides if notched), but pallet jacks can only enter from the stringer ends. Block pallets allow true four-way entry for both forklifts and pallet jacks.

If your facility uses automated conveyor systems, AS/RS (automated storage and retrieval systems), or robotic palletizers, dimensional consistency is critical. Plastic pallets or new wood pallets deliver the tight tolerances that automated equipment requires. Used wood pallets may have slight dimensional variations that can cause jams on conveyor lines.

Step 4: Plan for the Destination

Domestic shipments within the United States and Canada have no restrictions on pallet material. But international shipments are subject to ISPM-15 regulations that require all solid wood packaging to be heat-treated or fumigated. If you ship internationally, you can either use heat-treated wood pallets (we treat on-site) or switch to plastic pallets, which are ISPM-15 exempt.

Also consider whether the pallet is making a one-way trip or will be returned. One-way shipments favor lower-cost used wood pallets or lightweight nestable plastic pallets. Closed-loop supply chains, where pallets circulate between a fixed set of facilities, favor durable rackable plastic pallets or high-grade wood pallets that justify the higher upfront investment through many reuse cycles.

Quality Assurance

Our Inspection & Grading Process

Every pallet that leaves our yard at 7236 Murthum Ave, Warren, MI 48092 passes through a multi-step quality assurance process. We do not rely on automated sorting alone -- experienced personnel inspect each pallet by hand to ensure it meets the grade standards our customers depend on.

01

Inbound Inspection

Pallets arriving from collection routes and supplier partnerships are unloaded and visually inspected for damage, contamination, and structural integrity. Pallets with chemical spills, pest evidence, or severe rot are immediately diverted to our recycling line rather than entering the resale inventory.

02

Repair & Refurbishment

Pallets that need minor repairs -- a cracked deck board, a loose stringer, a protruding nail -- are sent to our repair station. Trained technicians replace damaged boards, re-nail loose components, and trim any splintered edges. Repaired pallets are re-inspected before returning to inventory.

03

Grading & Sorting

Every pallet is graded A, B, or C based on industry-standard criteria covering structural integrity, cosmetic condition, and dimensional accuracy. Graded pallets are sorted by size and stacked in designated areas of our yard. This allows us to fill orders quickly and accurately.

04

Final Outbound Check

Before pallets are loaded for delivery, a final quality check verifies the correct size, grade, quantity, and any special requirements (such as heat treatment stamps). Load counts are confirmed against the order, and the delivery is documented for traceability.

Lifecycle

Understanding the Pallet Lifecycle

A pallet is not a disposable commodity -- it is a reusable asset that can cycle through multiple owners and uses before reaching end of life. Understanding this lifecycle helps you make smarter purchasing decisions and reduce your total cost of pallet ownership.

Manufacturing

New pallets are built from lumber or molded from plastic. A new wood pallet enters the supply chain at full structural strength.

First Use

The pallet carries its initial load from manufacturer to distributor or retailer. After delivery, the pallet is either returned or enters the secondary market.

Repair & Resale

Used pallets are collected, inspected, and repaired. Minor damage is fixed and pallets are regraded for resale. This is the core of what Ace Pallet Service does.

Multi-Trip Reuse

A well-maintained wood pallet can make 15 to 30 trips through the supply chain. Each reuse cycle is dramatically cheaper than buying a new pallet.

End of Life

When repair is no longer viable, the pallet is dismantled and the wood is recycled into mulch, animal bedding, biomass fuel, or other products.

Why Lifecycle Thinking Saves You Money

Many businesses evaluate pallets purely on the purchase price per unit. But the real cost of a pallet is the cost per trip -- the total amount you spend on pallets divided by the number of times they carry a load before being retired. A $7 used pallet that makes 10 trips costs $0.70 per trip. A $45 plastic pallet that makes 200 trips costs $0.23 per trip. The more expensive pallet actually costs two-thirds less per use.

Our team can help you calculate cost-per-trip for different pallet options based on your specific use case, trip frequency, damage rate, and return logistics. This analysis often reveals that investing more upfront in higher-grade or plastic pallets produces significant savings over a 12-month period.

Sustainability

Eco-Friendly Sourcing

At Ace Pallet Service, sustainability is woven into every product we sell. Our wood pallets are sourced from closed-loop recycling programs that keep usable lumber out of landfills. When pallets reach the end of their structural life, we don't dispose of them — we transform them into mulch, animal bedding, biomass fuel, and other valuable products.

Our plastic pallet offerings are 100% recyclable, and many are manufactured from post-consumer recycled plastics. Custom pallets are engineered for maximum reuse cycles, reducing the total number of pallets your operation consumes over time.

By choosing Ace, you aren't just getting competitive pricing on quality products — you're partnering with a company that diverts thousands of tons of wood waste from Michigan landfills every year. That's good for your bottom line and good for the planet.
