Pallet Cost Calculator

Estimate your pallet costs and compare the total cost of ownership across new, used, and pooled options. Factor in purchase price, delivery, handling, damage rates, and end-of-life recycling to find the most economical approach for your operation.

Cost Per Trip

Calculate the true cost of each pallet trip by factoring in purchase price, expected number of use cycles, repair costs, and disposal or recycling fees. A $4 Grade B pallet that lasts 8 trips costs $0.50 per trip — less than a $30 plastic pallet that lasts 60 trips ($0.50 per trip) but without the upfront capital outlay.

Example Calculation

Grade B used pallet: $5.00 purchase / 8 trips = $0.63 per trip

Annual Budget Estimator

Determine your yearly pallet spend based on monthly consumption, grade selection, and delivery frequency. A mid-size warehouse using 500 pallets per month at $5 per unit spends approximately $30,000 annually on pallets alone — before factoring in delivery and disposal.

Example Calculation

500 pallets/month x $5 x 12 months = $30,000/year

Savings Comparison

Compare the five-year total cost of new vs. used vs. pooled pallets for your specific usage pattern. Most businesses save 40-70% by switching from new to high-quality used pallets without any compromise in performance for standard domestic applications.

Typical Savings

Switching from new ($12) to Grade B ($5): 58% savings

Terminology

Pallet Industry Glossary

New to the pallet industry? These are the essential terms and definitions you need to know when buying, selling, or managing pallets. Understanding the language helps you communicate clearly with suppliers and make more informed purchasing decisions.

GMA Pallet

The 48x40 inch pallet standardized by the Grocery Manufacturers Association. The most common pallet in North America, used in grocery, retail, and general merchandise.

Stringer Pallet

A pallet that uses two or three parallel boards (stringers) running the length of the pallet to support the deck boards. The most common construction type in the United States.

Block Pallet

A pallet that uses blocks of wood between the top and bottom decks, allowing four-way forklift entry. Common in Europe and growing in popularity in the U.S.

ISPM-15

International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures No. 15 — the global regulation requiring heat treatment or fumigation of wood packaging for international trade.

Heat Treatment (HT)

A process that raises the core temperature of wood to 56 degrees Celsius for 30 minutes to eliminate pests. Required by ISPM-15 for export pallets.

Deck Board

The horizontal boards on the top and bottom surfaces of a pallet that provide the loading platform.

Notched Stringer

A stringer with U-shaped cutouts that allow forklift tines to enter from all four sides, converting a two-way stringer pallet into a partial four-way entry pallet.

Dynamic Load Capacity

The maximum weight a pallet can support while being lifted and transported by a forklift or pallet jack.

Racking Capacity

The maximum weight a pallet can support when placed on warehouse racking, where only the outer edges of the pallet are supported.

Pallet Pooling

A rental model where a third-party company owns the pallets and leases them to shippers on a per-trip or per-use basis. CHEP and PECO are the largest pooling companies.

Procurement Strategy

Seasonal Buying Tips

Pallet pricing and availability fluctuate throughout the year. Understanding seasonal patterns helps you time your purchases for the best value and avoid supply gaps during peak demand periods.

Spring (March - May)

Lock In Before Peak Season

  • Place your summer orders early — demand spikes in Q2 as outdoor and construction industries ramp up
  • Review your pallet inventory after winter and schedule replacements for worn units before the rush
  • Negotiate quarterly supply agreements now to secure favorable pricing through peak months
  • Check your heat-treated pallet stock if you ship internationally — spring is a common time for export surges
Summer (June - August)

Manage Peak Demand

  • Expect tighter supply and slightly higher prices across all grades during summer peak demand
  • Schedule deliveries early in the week to avoid Friday backlogs when fleet capacity is thinnest
  • Inspect pallets for heat-related warping if stored outdoors — excessive sun exposure can cause cupping and splitting
  • Consider combo loads to stretch your budget when summer pricing peaks on premium grades
Fall (September - November)

Prepare for Holiday Shipping

  • Stock up on Grade A and B pallets before the holiday shipping surge begins in October
  • Retail and e-commerce companies should secure pallet supply by early September for Black Friday and holiday fulfillment
  • Schedule pallet pickups and recycling runs before year-end to clear your facility and capture any buyback value
  • Lock in Q1 pricing by establishing a supply agreement in November before the new year begins
Winter (December - February)

Take Advantage of Lower Demand

  • Winter typically brings the lowest pallet prices of the year — ideal for bulk purchases if you have storage capacity
  • Use the slower period to audit your pallet program: review costs, waste rates, and supplier performance
  • Plan for spring by forecasting your annual pallet needs and negotiating supply contracts
  • Protect stored pallets from prolonged moisture exposure — wet pallets gain weight and can develop mold or fungal staining
Compliance

Regulation Updates

Stay current on the regulatory changes affecting pallet procurement, international shipping, and sustainability compliance. We monitor developments so you can focus on running your business.

Active2024

EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR)

The EU adopted the PPWR in 2024, setting new reuse and recyclability targets for transport packaging including pallets. Multinational companies are applying these standards globally, affecting U.S. exporters.

Impact on Your Business

Companies exporting to EU markets must ensure pallet packaging meets recyclability thresholds. Recycled wood pallets already meet most requirements, giving them a compliance advantage over single-use alternatives.

Ongoing2024-2025

ISPM-15 Enforcement Intensification

Customs authorities in Europe, Australia, China, and South America have increased inspection rates for ISPM-15 compliance, rejecting non-stamped shipments with greater frequency.

Impact on Your Business

All international shippers must verify that every wood pallet carries a valid IPPC heat treatment stamp. Non-compliance risks cargo rejection, quarantine, and fines at destination ports.

Developing2024-2025

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Expansion

California, Oregon, and Colorado have expanded EPR laws covering packaging and transport materials. Michigan and other Midwest states are considering similar legislation.

Impact on Your Business

EPR laws hold manufacturers accountable for end-of-life management of packaging. Businesses should establish pallet recycling partnerships now to prepare for potential mandates.

Active2024

FSMA Sanitary Transport Rule Updates

FDA updates to the Sanitary Transportation of Human and Animal Food rule include clearer guidance on pallet condition requirements for food contact applications.

Impact on Your Business

Food and beverage companies should review their pallet specifications to ensure compliance. Grade A and heat-treated pallets are recommended for food-contact supply chains.
