The choice between wood and plastic pallets is one of the most common questions in logistics. Both materials have dedicated advocates and offer genuine advantages in specific applications. The right choice depends on your use case, budget, and operational requirements.
Wood pallets command approximately 93 percent of the North American pallet market. Plastic pallets represent a growing but still small segment. This market share reflects the overall cost advantage and versatility of wood.
A fair comparison must consider total cost of ownership, not just purchase price. Durability, repairability, weight, hygiene, regulatory compliance, and end-of-life value all influence the true cost of each option.
Cost Comparison
Wood pallets have a significant upfront cost advantage. A new 48x40 GMA wood pallet costs between eight and fifteen dollars. An equivalent plastic pallet costs between thirty and seventy dollars depending on construction quality.
Plastic pallets offset some of their higher purchase price through longer service life. A quality plastic pallet can last 10 years and over 200 trips in a controlled pooling environment. A wood pallet typically lasts 5 to 10 trips before needing repair.
However, wood pallets can be repaired at low cost, extending their useful life. Plastic pallets are generally not repairable. When a plastic pallet breaks, the entire unit must be replaced or recycled.
Durability and Performance
Plastic pallets are more resistant to moisture, chemicals, and insects than wood. They do not absorb liquids, do not rot, and cannot harbor pests. These properties make them ideal for pharmaceutical, food processing, and chemical handling environments.
Wood pallets are stiffer and often have higher static load capacities than comparably priced plastic pallets. Wood performs well under point loads and racking stresses common in standard warehouse operations.
In terms of impact resistance, plastic pallets handle drops and collisions better without cracking. Wood pallets break more easily on impact but a broken board can be replaced quickly.
Hygiene and Regulatory Compliance
Plastic pallets are easier to clean and sanitize than wood. Their non-porous surfaces can be washed, steam-cleaned, or chemically sanitized. Many food and pharmaceutical companies mandate plastic pallets in production areas.
Wood pallets require heat treatment for international shipping under ISPM-15. Plastic pallets are exempt because they do not harbor wood-boring pests. This exemption simplifies international shipping logistics.
For domestic food industry use, wood pallets remain widely accepted when they meet food-grade condition standards. Heat-treated wood pallets that are clean and in good repair satisfy most food safety auditing requirements.
Sustainability Considerations
Wood pallets are made from a renewable resource and are highly recyclable. At end of life, they can be repaired, dismantled for parts, ground into mulch, or used as biomass fuel. The carbon footprint of manufacturing is relatively low.
Plastic pallets are made from petroleum-based or recycled plastics. While they have a longer service life, their manufacturing carbon footprint is higher. Recycling infrastructure for plastic pallets is less developed than for wood.
For companies with strong sustainability commitments, wood pallets sourced from certified forests and managed through a repair and recycling program typically offer the best environmental profile.
